Thoughts on Writing

Just Keep Writing

When I was a little girl I dreamed of reaching the world with my writing. At the time I wasn’t necessarily thinking about reaching them with the Gospel, that came later, I just wanted to be the next J.K. Rowling or Enid Blyton or Roald Dahl.

When I was 16 I started moving towards that goal. I started a blog (that I have since discontinued), I wrote newsletters for my family and friends, I wrote articles that I submitted to big Christian sites, and I dabbled in writing devotionals. At the same time I never felt like non-fiction was the thing that I wanted to pursue. I wanted to write a novel, a series even! But fiction ideas have always been hard for me, while non-fiction has come easily. I could follow fiction prompts and I think some of my short stories weren’t half bad, but coming up with ideas that I could run with was hard.

Not finding my niche (or maybe, not liking the niche I was good at) was one of the many reasons I stopped writing for months on end. None of the reasons that I stopped writing were good reasons. One thing I am grateful for, however, is that because I am a student I wasn’t able to quit writing completely as I still had assignments to write.

At the beginning of this year, I felt ready to begin writing for myself again. Writing with that huge vision of being able to reach people with my words. That was when I started this blog and I made the decision to join the Young Writer’s Workshop offered by Brett Harris and Jacquelle Crowe Ferris. I am glad that I made the decision to jump back into the writing world, although it has been difficult to start pretty much from scratch again.

It has been hard for me to get in a zone of writing and posting regularly. Figuring out exactly what it is to write about. Relearning the writing-editing-sharing process. But it has been one of the most rewarding things of my year so far.

I still have a dream of writing a book one day. I have come to accept that non-fiction is my true love and I am far better at it than fiction (although maybe one day I will enter the fiction realm again). At any rate my hope is that I will be able to reach others with the Gospel through my words, even if it is only one or two people.

For now I have learnt to just keep writing. To keep putting words on the page until I find out what my specific passion and platform is. And I just want to say, if you are needing that little push, you should pick up your pen and start) or keep) writing too. The only way to get where you want to go is to start.
